Duck! Indonesia suspends grapefruit-sized concrete balls above railway lines to stop 'roof riders'

Duck! Indonesia suspends grapefruit-sized concrete balls above railway lines to stop 'roof riders' - Indonesia has gone to imaginative extremes to try and stop commuters from illegally riding on the roofs of train - from hosing them down with red paint to threatening them with dogs.

But now authorities have developed an intimidating and possibly deadly new tactic - suspending rows of grapefruit-sized concrete balls to rake over the top of trains.

They hope the balls - which would deliver serious blows to the head if they didn't knock a person off the roof of a train - will be enough to deter 'train surfers'.

Mateta Rizahulhaq, a spokesman for the state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api, said: 'We've tried just about everything, even putting rolls of barbed wire on the roof, but nothing seems to work.

'Maybe this will do it.'

Trains that crisscross Indonesia on poorly maintained tracks left behind by Dutch coloniser six decades ago are usually packed with passengers, especially during rush hour.

The first of the concrete balls have been installed above carriage height near a station outside the capital, Jakarta.

Other attempts to deter commuters include spreading oil on the roofs and hiring musicians to perform safety songs.

In 2008, at least 53 passengers died in accidents after boarding train roofs, according to the BBC.

Most victims were electrocuted by overhead power cable, but some fall off as they trains are moving.

At peak times, 400,000 commuters cram into, or on, train carriages into the capital.

Mulyanto, 27, who rides between his hometown of Bogor and Jakarta for work, said: 'I was really scared when I first heard about these ball.

'It sounds like it could be really dangerous. But I don't think it will last long. They have tried everything to keep us from riding... but in the end we always win.'

Poorer people often end up on train roofs because they are unable to afford tickets. ( dailymail.co.uk )

Smokers are thinner than those who don't smoke

Smokers are thinner than those who don't smoke - US scientists have figured out exactly how nicotine acts as an appetite suppressant in the brain, a finding that could one day help in the fight against obesity, researchers said on Thursday.

Smokers tend to be thinner than people who don't smoke, and the study led by Yale University and published in the journal Science describes how nicotine activates certain neurons in a part of the brain called the hypothalamus.

Those neurons tell the body when it's had enough to eat, according to senior author Marina Picciotto, a professor of neurobiology and pharmacology at Yale.

"Many people say they won't quit smoking because they'll gain weight. Ultimately, we would like to help people maintain their body weight when they kick the habit and perhaps help non-smokers who are struggling with obesity."

Researchers made the discovery by studying mice, but are hopeful that similar receptors can be isolated in humans, too.

A research scientist in Picciotto's lab was studying nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, which are on the surface of neurons, to see if an experimental drug to treat depression would have any effect.

"He noticed that mice given the drug ate less than those not on the medication," said the study, which led to a wider investigation with researchers at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada and the University of Hawaii.

A series of experiments showed that the drug could turn on a certain nicotine receptor which then told a subset of neurons in the hypothalamus - called pro-opiomelanocortin or POMC cells - that dinner time was over.

The receptor was also independent of the ones that trigger the craving for nicotine in smokers.

"This suggests it is possible to get the effect of appetite suppression without also triggering the brain's reward centres," Picciotto said.

"Identifying this receptor is important for the understanding of the mechanisms related to addiction, weight and smoking." ( AFP )

Beauty sleep, for your body and your brain

Beauty sleep, for your body and your brain - We are all familiar with the unpleasant effects of sleep deprivation: fatigue, lack of energy, inattention and irritability. Most of us should really get more sleep -- it would make us feel and perform much better and can even help us lose weight. But did you know it's also possible to get too much sleep?

It turns out that sleep is sort of like Goldilocks -- you don't want too little, and you don't want too much.

What number is just right? The answer is really a range: somewhere between six and eight hours. Any more or less than that may do more than just make you sleepy -- it may cause your brain to age prematurely.

According to one study, both men and women who averaged seven hours of sleep per night performed better on reasoning tests than both people who slept fewer than six hours per night as well as people who slept more than eight. Most interesting, the researchers involved think that the findings show that consistent sleep routines that include sleeping for around seven hours a night can help reduce the regular cognitive decline that happens to all of us as we get older:

  • The study tracked men and women over the course of five years and consistently asked them to perform memory, vocabulary and logic tests.
  • The study suggested that people who got too little or too much sleep showed a loss in brain function that was like aging four to seven years!
  • People tend to sleep less when they age, so maintaining six to eight hours of sleep a night may be a great natural way to prevent some of that natural memory loss that occurs with aging.

You might be surprised by the fact that too much sleep could be bad for you, and you wouldn't be alone -- the researchers in the study were surprised as well. They think it may be that these people aren't actually sleeping more than eight hours -- they may be lying in bed battling insomnia, or they may be getting poor-quality sleep. Being in bed doesn't count -- you need around seven hours of quality sleep each night in order to function at your best and keep your brain young.

Six Signs You Need More Sleep

Six Signs You Need More Sleep - Need a reason to hit the snooze button a few more times? Sleep is as vital for survival as food, according to Dr. Mary Susan Esther, president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). And chances are you're more likely to burn the midnight oil to finish all your work (and play) than you are to pass up dinner. But chronic lack of sleep can lead to a host of health problems such as high blood pressure, obesity, depression, irregular hormone production, a weakened immune system, memory lapses, constant irritability and decreased concentration and reaction times.

So are you spending enough quality time between the sheets asleep? See how many of the signs below describe you. Then decide if a sleep deficit is holding you back.

1. You're not hungry for lunch.

A lack of sleep can make you constantly want to eat more, or persistently feel like you're not hungry. It throws off your internal clock resulting in abnormal feelings, which is why so many people lose or gain weight during periods of sleeplessness.

2. You've looked at three other Web sites in the last 5 minutes and checked your email twice.

No, you (probably) don't have Attention Deficit Disorder. Whether you're writing a quick email or solving chemical equations; a lack of sleep can make focusing seem impossible.

3. You can't remember where you put the car keys.

Your brain needs sleep to refresh and regenerate. Without it, your short-term memory may be impaired which is why pulling an all-nighter rarely yields better results than getting quality shut-eye, according to Dr. Neil Kline, a sleep physician and representative of the American Sleep Association.

4. You can't carry on a conversation.

Come Saturday night you may work a party like a pro, but as long as you're sleep-deficient, coming up with witty or even coherent one-liners is out of the question.

5. You're drowsy at the wheel.

Your eyes may glaze over now and then when you're staring at the computer screen or stuck in an endless meeting, but if you struggle to stay awake behind the wheel or doing any task that puts your life at risk you're not just bored. You need more sleep.

Caffeinated drinks, blasting music, or rolling down the windows (in January) may arouse you briefly, but it won't keep you alert for long drives.

6. You feel sick and you never get sick.

Your immune system repairs and strengthens while you sleep. So in addition to eating flu-fighting foods, log at least seven hours a night to stay healthy all season. ( menshealth.com )

Best and Worst Sleep Positions

Best and Worst Sleep Positions - Your preferred p.m. pose could be giving you back and neck pain, tummy troubles, even premature wrinkles. Discover the best positions for your body—plus the one you may want to avoid.

http://a57.foxnews.com/static/managed/img/Health/2009/July/396/223/Dream_Use.jpg

The best: Back position

  • Good for: Preventing neck and back pain, reducing acid reflux, minimizing wrinkles, maintaining perky breasts
  • Bad for: Snoring
  • The scoop: Sleeping on your back makes it easy for your head, neck, and spine to maintain a neutral position. You’re not forcing any extra curves into your back, says Steven Diamant, a chiropractor in New York City. It’s also ideal for fighting acid reflux, Olson says: "If the head is elevated, your stomach will be below your esophagus so acid or food can’t come back up."

Back-sleeping also helps prevent wrinkles, because nothing is pushing against your face, notes Dr. Dee Anna Glaser, a professor of dermatology at Saint Louis University. And the weight of your breasts is fully supported, reducing sagginess.

Back sleepers: Consider this

"Snoring is usually most frequent and severe when sleeping on the back," Dr. Olson says.
Perfect pillow: One puffy one. The goal is to keep your head and neck supported without propping your head up too much.

Next best: Side position

  • Good for: Preventing neck and back pain, reducing acid reflux, snoring less, sleeping during pregnancy
  • Bad for: Your skin and your breasts
  • The scoop: Side-sleeping is great for overall health—it reduces snoring and keeps your spine elongated. If you suffer from acid reflux, this is the next best thing to sleeping on your back. The downside:

"Sleeping on your side can cause you to get wrinkles," Glaser says. Blame all that smushing of one side of your face into the pillow.

Side sleepers: Consider this

If you’re pregnant, sleep on your left side. It’s ideal for blood flow.
Perfect pillow: A thick one. "You need to fill the space above your shoulder so your head and neck are supported in a neutral position," says Ken Shannon, a physical therapist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Not ideal: Fetal position

  • Good for: Snoring less, sleeping during pregnancy

  • Bad for: Preventing neck and back pain, minimizing wrinkles, maintaining perky breasts
  • The scoop: When you snooze with your knees pulled up high and chin tucked into your chest, you may feel it in the morning, especially if you have an arthritic back or joints, Olson says.

"This curved position also restricts diaphragmatic breathing," adds Dody Chang, a licensed acupuncturist with the Center for Integrative Medicine at Greenwich Hospital in Connecticut. And if you make this your nightly pose, you may bring on premature facial wrinkles and breast sag.

Fetal-position sleepers: Consider this

Just straighten out a bit—try not to tuck your body into an extreme curl.
Perfect pillow: One plump pillow—the same as side position, to give your head and neck support.

The worst: Stomach position

  • Good for: Easing snoring

  • Bad for: Avoiding neck and back pain, minimizing wrinkles, maintaining perky breasts
  • The scoop: "Stomach-sleeping makes it difficult to maintain a neutral position with your spine," Shannon explains. It puts pressure on joints and muscles, which can irritate nerves and lead to pain, numbness, and tingling. "Think about the soreness you’d feel if you kept your neck turned to one side for 15 minutes during the day," Diamant explains.

In this position you have your head to one side for hours at a time. You won’t necessarily feel it the next day, but you may soon start to ache.

Stomach sleepers: Consider this

Do you snore? "Stomach-sleeping may even be good for you," Dr. Olson says. Facedown keeps your upper airways more open. So if you snore and aren’t suffering from neck or back pain, it’s fine to try sleeping on your belly.

Perfect pillow: Just one (and make it a thin one) or none at all.

Swear you don’t move at all at night?

Think again. While you generally spend the most time in the position you fall asleep in, even those who barely have to make their beds in the morning move two to four times an hour, which may add up to 20 or more tosses and turns a night, says Dr. Eric Olson, co-director of the Mayo Clinic Center for Sleep Medicine in Rochester, Minn. "That’s completely normal, and you’ll still go into deep REM sleep, the restorative kind," he says. ( foxnews.com )

Small Business Ideas That Require Little or No Money

Small Business Ideas That Require Little or No Money - Being an entrepreneur does not have to break the bank. Since laptops, Internet connections and e-commerce have become commonplace, considering a small business operated from home is easier than ever, according to the experts at Entrepreneur Magazine. Sit back, sip a cup of coffee and start a small business with existing capital and less than $1,500 in savings. After all, 20 percent of small-business ventures begin in the home.

  • If calculators and number crunching create a smile, become a home-based accountant and tax preparer. Use the old accounting degree to prepare tax returns for individuals. Accountants can also reconcile the books for small businesses and prepare annual reports for busy independent contractors. A reliable Internet-connected computer, accounting software and a fax machine enables most accounting-based business transactions.

Cleaning Services

  • Make clients happy by cleaning up after them. Invest in basic cleaning supplies, research reliable cleaning methods and market your cleaning services for reasonable rates. Posting fliers at grocery stores, daycare centers, church bulletin boards and in school lobbies will garner the attention of busy parents that could use some tidying around the house.

Repair Service

  • Being handy can make you money. Having the ability to troubleshoot electronics, shore up old fences or repair junior's bicycle can turn a hobby into a business. Prepare to spend a little cash on an ad in the local phone book. Follow up by building a tool bag (possibly from existing tools) and advertising for free on Internet discussion boards and social networking sites.

Selling Online

  • Make a profession out of recycling used treasures and selling them online. After creating accounts with several online auction websites, clean the house. Collect unused items, antiques and unopened gifts to re-sell. On the weekends head to rummage sales, yard sales and auctions to purchase bargains for re-sale on the Internet. Start-up costs include postage, website fees, Internet connection fees and money to go shopping for items.

Event Planning

  • If planning the annual holiday gathering rates low on the personal stress-o-meter, start a business in event planning. Brides, family reunion hosts and children preparing for their parent's anniversary celebration could all use a little help. Planning meals, finding event locations and creating unique decoration ideas top the list of a home-based event planner. Before opening an event planning business gather local resources, make contacts with caterers and venues, and invest in an electronic organizer. ( ehow.com )

Now Muslim militants target Prince Harry: Outrage after extremists post chilling online hate video

Now Muslim militants target Prince Harry: Outrage after extremists post chilling online hate video - An extremist group is believed to be targeting Prince Harry after a propaganda hate video has come to light following the assassination of Osama Bin Laden.

The 26-year-old, third in line to the throne, is the subject of a three-minute video posted last week by an organisation calling itself Muslims Against Crusades.

It is believed that Harry is being targeted to avenge the death of the Al Qaeda leader, who was shot by American commandos last Sunday, as six years ago he dressed as a Nazi and has served the British Army in Afghanistan.

The video, entitled 'Harry the Nazi', shows the young royal - who was best man to his elder brother William just over a week ago - serving for the British Army against Taliban forces in 2007 and 2008, saying that 'all my wishes have come true'.

It begins with the Muslims Against Crusades sign looming large and imposing, and then sounds of soldiers marching are accompanied by Arabic voices.

Originally posted on the group's jihadist website, the video continues to show snippets of Prince Harry talking to the media while in action in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

It also shows the royal - who spent 10 weeks in Afghanistan and joked that he is a 'bullet magnet' - using derogatory Asian terms 'Paki' and 'Raghead' in videos taken while he was in the Middle East, and exposed by the News of the World.

The clips are spliced together and framed in a central box, as though someone is watching the footage on a television, flicking through Harry's actions.

Outside of the frame, there is a dark border, and smoke rises from beneath.

The clips stop suddenly, and all that remains is a picture of Harry dressed as a Nazi - a decision which caused outrage, when he wore the outfit for a fancy dress party in 2005 - and then the production abruptly ends..

The film is designed to incite hatred against Harry - who has recently been promoted to captain in the Army - and it appears to have worked. Below the video, posted on YouTube, people have written aggressive, threatening messages in response to it.

One person wrote: 'May Allah curse and destroy him.' Another, calling himself Brother Younis, said: 'May he rot in hell.' And a third poster pointed out that both Harry and Hitler begin with the letter H, and added: 'Harry the royal British Nazi.'.

Dead: Osama Bin Laden was shot by US commandos in northern Pakistan on May 2 and Anjem Choudary, a member of the pro-Islamic group 'Islam4UK', has warned that Britain should expect another 7/7 terror attack

'Prince Harry is inevitably at risk,' a security source told the News of the World. 'As risks go up then the protection capability has to be increased.'

Muslims Against Crusades's website claims that their members are 'raising the banner for Islam' and reveals why Prince Harry - and William - are targets.

In the Frequently Asked Questions section they write: 'It would seem fitting and appropriate to condemn individuals, who sympathise with such a brutal mob (referring to the British Army who are fighting in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya), or who promote their literature or glorify their cause.

'William and Harry are not exempt from accountability, and their conscientious decision to enrol in an army that engages in the aforementioned crimes, cannot be taken lightly.'

The extremist organisation today claimed that the video was not meant to be inflammatory, and inist that it is not a call to arms for terrorists to target Harry.

The group's spokesman, Islamic cleric Anjem Choudary did admit, however, that the video was designed to direct Muslim anger towards the Royal Family's involvement in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

He said the video was created to promote the group's aborted attempts to protest at the Royal Wedding.

'There is a real anger with the Royal Family about their participation in war against Iraq and Prince Harry because of his tour fighting against Muslims in Afghanistan,' said the 44-year-old.

'Prince William has also expressed a desire to fight in Afghanistan.

'This video was being used to explain why we were planning to protest at the Royal Wedding.'

He continued: 'I can assure everyone that the Muslims Against Crusades has no intention of targeting Prince Harry or any other member of the Royal Family.

'We believe in political action, not military action. We believe in the covenant of security; in return for our wealth and well-being protected it is not permitted to target wealth and life of those with whom we live.

'It is the objective of this, and videos like it, to draw attention to the Royal Family's involvement in wars that kill our Muslim brothers and sisters.'

Last Friday Choudary organised a 200-person strong protest outside the U.S. Embassy in London, so that Muslims Against Crusades could voice their opinions against 'arrogant' President Obama, who ordered the commandos to attack Bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, northern Pakistan.

They organised a mock funeral for the 54-year-old Al Qaeda leader, and carried placards which read: 'Royal Family baby killers' and 'William and Harry watch your back'.

And Al Qaeda-supporting cleric Choudary warned that Britain is likely to suffer another 7/7 terrorist attack.

'Following the boasts and gloats of the arrogant President Barack Obama that he ordered the murder of "unarmed" Sheikh Osama Bin Laden without trial or consideration of his rights and the shooting and kidnapping of his defenceless wife and son, Muslims around the world are witness to America's utter disregard for fairness or justice,' the Muslims Against Crusades website explained.

Police stepped in to separate the protesters and members of the English Defence League amid threats of violence from both sides.

Though many were shocked that the protest was allowed to go ahead, coming as it did shortly after the verdict into the 7/7 inquest was released by Lady Justice Heather Hallett.

She recorded that the 52 victims had been 'unlawfully' killed when four terrorists attacked three London Underground trains and a bus in 2005.

While the Metropolitan Police refused to answer questions about the extremist group asked by MailOnline directly, a 'police source' told the News of the World: 'The Met are constantly monitoring activity by Muslims Against Crusades.

'If a direct threat is made we will respond.' ( dailymail.co.uk )

Prince William: Remembering His Mother on His Wedding Day

Prince William: Remembering His Mother on His Wedding Day - Soon after Prince William told the world that he and Kate Middleton were engaged, we also learned that William had given Kate his mother's sapphire and diamond ring. Of the ring, William said he was just making sure his mother didn't miss out on the special occasion. "It's my mother's engagement ring," he explained, "so of course it's very special to me."

Getting married without your mom is hard. You're happy and excited, but you're also sad and mournful. The one person you'd want by your side isn't there to cheer you along. I know, because I got married without my mother, too.

Throughout the planning of my wedding, I longed for my mom. She died, though, just a few weeks after I got engaged, when I was 25. I wanted her help choosing a gown and picking the menu. I wanted her opinion on wedding locations and where my husband and I should go on our honeymoon. And I simply craved my mother's inexhaustible interest in my life. How many times could friends listen to me go on and on about floral arrangements and table decorations?

I realize my wedding story is different from Prince William's. I was the bride, after all, and clearly I had more nut-and-bolt planning to do than the Prince of Wales. But I also didn't lose my mother when I was 15 years old, and I didn't have to mourn her in front of the world.

I'd like to think William and Kate chose to get married in Westminster Abbey, where his mother's funeral took place, because it symbolizes that his life -- and his mother's -- are forever connected. It's also not a coincidence, I imagine, that after the ceremony, William and Kate rode to Buckingham Palace in the same carriage that carried Prince Charles and Diana after their nuptials in 1981. Both the Abbey and carriage are physical connections to his mother, and such tangible links can feel like a warm, maternal embrace. I chose to get married under a canopy of my mother's favorite bright and floral scarves.

Healing also comes from people, especially those who knew Princess Diana personally, and can share their own memories and stories. Kate never knew her would-be mother-in-law, and perhaps that's why the Royal guest list included those who knew Princess Diana best. Elton John attended the ceremony, and it was Elton John, Princess Diana's dear friend, who sang "Candle in the Wind" at her funeral.

The royal wedding was great fun to watch, but maybe while the festivities continue to unfold, take just a few moments to think about this: Prince William is teaching all of us that even during our happiest times, it is possible to keep the memory of our loved ones alive. ( huffingtonpost.com)

The Timely Itinerary to Westminster Abbey

Starting on page 128 of the People double issue it has dedicated a lot of information on the royal wedding. One such piece is an itinerary starting on page 130 of what will transpire April 29 starting at 8:30 a.m. London time, 3:30 a.m. ET. The Queen will designate royal titles to the bride and groom. Guests will start to arrive at Westminster Abbey at around 8:45 a.m.

Mother of the bride, Carole Middleton, is expected to arrive at Westminster at approximately 10:30 a.m. Between 10:40 and 10:50 a.m. the Queen and Prince Philip as well as Prince William, the groom, will arrive. The bridesmaids and Pippa Middleton, the maid of honor, will get there at 10:50 a.m.

At the magical hour of 11 a.m. the Princess bride, Kate Middleton, along with her father Michael, pull up in a Rolls-Royce Phantom VI. This is the time her wedding dress is finally revealed to the world. After their arrival the ceremony begins.

Royal Wedding Procession Sites

En route to the wedding ceremony crowds will be abundant at many of London's famous sites awaiting the Princess bride and later the newly royal couple. The procession to Westminster Abbey for Kate and her father, along with the married couple, is provided by The Royal Parks. It starts off at Buckingham Palace, passing by Clarence House where Prince William and Prince Harry resided, The Mall which is a boulevard leading from the palace to Trafalgar Square and the Horse Guard Parade grounds. The route continues on to the Women of World War II Monument, Downing Street where the Prime Minister resides, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Cenotaph, HM Treasury which is the Crown's personal vault, the House of Parliament and Big Ben and its final destination, Westminster Abbey.

Prince William and Princess Catherine to Buckingham Palace Balcony

Once the vows are exchanged and the bridal couple signs the register it is official Kate Middleton now becomes Princess Catherine. At noon, the newlyweds begin their departure back to Buckingham Palace either in an open carriage, the State Landau Coach, or an enclosed glass coach in the event of rain. Bells will be ringing throughout the city to mark this occasion. When the couple arrives back at the palace it is time for a private photo session.

1:25 p.m. is the moment everyone will be waiting for when the royal couple, the wedding party and respective families all come out onto the balcony. More than likely William will follow in his mother's footsteps and kiss his bride for the world to see. The Royal Air Force will have its flyover to honor the Prince and Princess. This is the last time they will be seen publicly as the Queen prepares a reception.

Later that evening another party will be given by Prince Charles that's rumored to go into the late of night. By 9 a.m. EDT it will all be over with. No doubt there will be rebroadcasts on numerous cable channels showing the wedding from start to finish if you have to go to work that day. ( yahoo.com )
